Where's the butter?
I was recently forced to give in to the evils of margarine, which I swore would never happen! I am a butter girl through and through, and I honestly think that the natural fat in butter (yum) is way better than that processed stuff in spreads, even if they are low fat. But much to my absolute SHOCK, there is a butter shortage in Japan so I gave in and bought this. It is margarine with butter inside, but the taste still leaves a lot to be desired. The most disturbing part is that in Japanese, it is called ファット・スプレッド, or "fat spread." Gross!
I'm giving serious thought to trying to make my own butter, I'm just not sure I have the arm strength.

OMG!!!!!!!!! I was just at the grocery store tonight desperately searching for butter! In its normal spot was only margarine, and I thought the store had moved the butter! I finally found the last container of butter (expensive no added salt butter), and wakled off wondering why there was no butter. Now I know!! I wonder if they have some at the Milkland store in Ouchiyama... it's locally produced. I'd better get some before they run out, too!!

So that's why I've been having trouble...I refuse to buy Snow Brand, and they did have that at my regular grocery, but that's all. I finally found some Yotsuba at a different store. I'm in Hokkaido, so you'd think I'd be able to get dairy!
I totally agree, margarine and other substitute foods are gross, and usually worse for you than the original. After all, look at how the French eat...and they're all skinny and pretty!

Wait till DOD hears this!

I heard about this! I seriously don't know what I would do without butter -- "fat spread" is just not a suitable substitute. And "Corn Soft" is not a promising name.
I hope butter returns to Japan soon!

Totally agree with you. There's no such thing as a substitute for butter. I was getting desperate but fortunately found that I can order some online at Tomizawa http://shop.tomizawa.co.jp/category/data.php?fCategory=28&sCategory=02 - wow today it is soldout already but they say they sell a limited "dose" of 150 packs every day. Well, that is if you are willing to pay for shipping - I don't mind because I always order bread flour and other stuff from them.
